New Project: Promised Land (2022)
About the Project
This is a project creating digital artwork. The original concept of the artwork was to combine myths and mythical imagery from around the world and convey it through the visual language of digital art. However, the project is now taking inspiration from these myths and using them as a base to create imaginative worlds. Originally slightly random in development and creation, the artwork has now been collectively brought together under a few key concepts that have been further developed.
Author (Yoojin Hong MacDonald 1983)
I am a graphic designer and artist born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. I majored in graphic design and studied for 8 years in total, completing my studies with an MA in Communication Design (Now; MA Graphic Communication Design) at Central St. Martins College of Arts and Design, London. I have been lucky enough to take part in various group exhibitions throughout the years, mostly in my hometown of Seoul, but also farther afield in places like New York and London too.
I currently work as the head of graphic design for an import company, managing a small team that mostly focuses on package design, localisation and branding. I have also had previous part-time experience lecturing and tutoring at universities in and around Seoul since 2015.
Skills
My artwork is a series of digital drawings that are predominantly made using Adobe Illustrator. The creation of each piece usually starts with a freehand pencil sketch, without colour, that is then transferred digitally to be completed in Adobe Illustrator. I plan to create short moving images as GIFs later on as things progress.
Promised Land Contents
1. Episodes - Artwork based on three weeks - One piece, with one story to tell.
2. Shiney - The imaginative world. Only the data realm remains after the extinction of humanity, and the world they built carries on autonomously, producing luxurious visuals long after the last flicker of humankind has been extinguished. The world now has an unlimited, every continuing stream of visual treasures, designed to gratify the gluttony of humanity - but the masters they were created for have long since disappeared into oblivion.
3. Mythes - New icons and idolatry. A broken world that created bizarre gods and even stranger prayers.
4. Memory - Stories of man’s new best friend. Cute, cuddly A.I robots that collect memories for their masters.
